Motivational Interviewing for Women Seeking Treatment for Tobacco Use Disorder

About the Program

Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances in modern society and Tobacco Use Disorder is a psychiatric condition on par with other substance use disorders. Like other substance use disorders, psychologists can employ familiar evidence-based modalities to address this overlooked concern with their patients. This intermediate 60-minute lecture co-presented by women’s health psychologist Dr. Rebecca Richey, PsyD and Nationally Certified Tobacco Treatment Professional Jim Pavlik, MA, NCTTP will explore the use of Motivational Interviewing to help women overcome this powerful addiction.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the disproportionate burden of tobacco among women and unique psychological and physical risk factors that lead to this disproportionate burden.
  2. Use three Motivational Interviewing techniques that can be use during a regular clinical encounter to enhance the latent desire to quit using tobacco and commit to a jointly created treatment plan.
